Apple's Home app is the control center for your home. As long as you have a smart home system, you can use the Home app to control various functions in all your living spaces.

Paired with Apple's HomeKit accessories, you can perform tasks like turning lights on and off, opening the garage door, checking up on security feeds, and more! With the right accessories, you'll have control over your home through just an app.

Continue reading to learn how to use the Home app and make your home as comfortable as it can be.

Setting Up HomeKit

Before you begin, make sure the accessories you buy are HomeKit-compatible. You'll find various them on Apple's website that can be connected to the Home app. Once you've confirmed this, follow these steps to connect your accessories to the Home app.

To Set Up HomeKit:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Tap on "Add Accessory."
  3. Either scan the HomeKit accessory's QR code or hold the accessory near your iPhone.

Once the HomeKit accessory has been registered, you can control it from the Home app.
Once you've registered the accessory, you should assign it to a room.

The option to set your accessories to specific rooms is especially useful if you plan on having multiple HomeKit accessories because it helps them cooperate.

Now that you've set up your first HomeKit accessory start setting them all up! Once you're satisfied with your new smart home system, you'll be able to control your home with greater ease than ever before.

Next, let's learn how to use your HomeKit accessories.

How to Use HomeKit Accessories

Depending on the accessory, the options you'll have when controlling it will be different. However, you can find these controls on the "Home" page of the Home app.

On the "Home" page, you'll find all your accessories. And if you want to organize them based on favorites or rooms, we'll show you how later.

For each accessory, you can control it just by tapping the accessory's tab. For example, if you want to close the garage door, press on the garage door tab, and it'll switch from "Open" to "Close."

Meanwhile, for accessories like lights, you can adjust it on a spectrum. Tap and hold to access the accessory's specifics, such as changing a light's brightness.

After tapping and holding an accessory's tab, you'll see a "Settings" option in the bottom-right corner. Tap this to make some slight changes to your accessory, such as changing its room assignment, adding it to your "Favorites," or grouping it with other accessories.

Creating Rooms and Zones

To organize your HomeKit accessories, you will want to create Rooms and Zones on your Home app. Suppose you have a HomePod, HomeKit lights, and HomeKit humidifiers in your living room. In that case, creating a "Living Room" category will help you manage those specific accessories.

Zones are similar to Rooms, except they cover a much larger area. Most of the time, Zones help categorize the floors in your house. However, with a large enough space, you can also add Zones like the backyard, the front yard, or more.

Follow these steps to create Rooms or Zones on your Home app.

To Create a Room on Home App:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Tap on "Rooms" on the menu at the bottom.
  3. Tap the "Menu" icon in the top-left; it should be a list with three dots and three lines.
  4. You'll see a list of rooms you've already created. To add a new one, tap "Add Room..."
  5. Enter a name for the new room. Apple also suggests room names on this menu.
  6. Tap "Done" once you've created the Room.

To Create a Zone on Home App:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Tap on "Rooms" on the menu at the bottom.
  3. Tap the "Menu" icon in the top-left; it should be a list with three dots and three lines.
  4. You'll see a list of rooms you've created. Tap on any one of them.
  5. Tap "Zone."
  6. Enter a name for the Zone. Once you've entered a name for a new Zone, it'll appear under the "Zone" option for other Rooms.
  7. Tap "Done" once you've created the Zone.

Creating Scenes

Scenes are a specific set of accessory settings that create a mood in your room or home altogether. By adjusting the brightness of individual lights or the status of your air conditioning, you'll be able to set a Scene.

Try creating a "Good Night" scene. You can have all your home's lights are off, the windows and doors closed, the humidifier turned on for the night, and your security system on lockdown. Once you've created a "Good Night" scene, tap that Scene tab to activate all of those accessories' presets. Voila!

To Create Scenes on Apple Home App:

To create a different Scene than the "Good Night" example, follow these easy steps to begin personalizing your home.

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Tap the "+" in the top-right corner. A pop-up will appear with two options: "Add Accessory" and "Add Scene."
  3. Tap "Add Scene."
  4. Tap "Custom." Apple will also have a list of suggested Scenes at the top of this page.
  5. Give the new Scene a name. Keep it simple since you'll be saying this name if you use Siri to activate scenes.
  6. Tap "Add Accessories." You'll see a page full of tabs of your accessories.
  7. Tap the circle in the top-right corner of any accessory tab to add it to the Scene. Tap and hold any accessory to adjust the settings you want it to have for the Scene.
  8. Tap "Done" when you've selected each accessory and adjusted its settings.

The most common Scenes that people make are morning and nighttime Scenes, but you can get creative if you want.

You can make Scenes just for movie nights that turn off the living room lights and turn on the speakers. Or, set the mood for evenings with your significant other by making a "Date Night" Scene for fancy stay-at-home dinners.

Good To Know:

Simple Scene names are easier for Siri to understand your voice commands. More details later in the article!
