How to Use Chrome Remote Desktop on an iPad

If you’re new to using Google Chrome remote desktop or Google Chrome for iPad, this is the guide for you.

Nowadays, working from home (WFH) is inevitable, and becoming the norm. If you’re one of the millions of people who can’t return to the office yet but need access to specific files on your desktop in the office, there’s hope.

Keep reading to find out how you can finally access that pesky spreadsheet from your home computer or iPad.

If you heard of Chrome Remote Desktop beta, worry not as Google published the official version for everyone to use now. It’s officially called “Chrome Remote Desktop.”

What is Chrome Remote Desktop?

Chrome Remote Desktop is a web-based desktop extension. It’s a virtual desktop that you can control and activate from a remote location and any computers or devices. It’s a free software by Google and is easily downloadable.

It’s a great tool to know how to use, primarily if you work from home. Google gives you the option to get “Remote Access” and “Remote Support” through Chrome Remote Desktop. Either option provides you and or someone else you trust access to your computer remotely.

"Remote Access" gives you access to your devices through your email account. It also applies to previously configured devices. You will most likely be using “Remote Access” more than “Remote Support.”

"Remote Support" gives you the option to receive support from a friend or family member or anyone else you trust. Through Remote Support, you can choose to either “Get Support” or “Give Support,” depending on if you or the other person is getting access to a computer remotely.

Why use Chrome Remote Desktop?

The benefits of using Chrome Remote Desktop is to give you virtual access to all the files you need from another computer without using a wire, USB key, and (hopefully not a) floppy disk.

Whether you choose to give yourself or someone else you trust remote access to your computer, you won’t need to worry about physically transferring files from your work computer to bring home. For that, you save money, time, and your worries.

The other benefit of using Chrome Remote Desktop is the ease of access you have. Sometimes it can be complicated to access information on online servers and other content management systems.

Chrome Remote Desktop removes this issue to make it easy for anyone to set up and access the files they need. Let’s take a look at how does Chrome Remote Desktop works.

How does Chrome Remote Desktop Work?

You can use Chrome Remote Desktop for iPad with any tablet model. For the extension to operate correctly, you must have the latest iPadOS downloaded.

However, the desktop you want to access has to be awake and turned on at all times. If the host computer is turned off, offline or in sleep mode, Chrome Remote Desktop doesn’t work.

This means you will need someone to turn on your host computer in the office and help you download the software, or you will need to go into the office and set up Chrome Remote Desktop yourself.

How to Setup Chrome Remote Desktop

On the host computer, you want to access remotely, download the Chrome Remote Desktop software. Go to

  1. Install the app and follow and complete the setup instructions on the host computer. A few important notes to remember are:
    1. If you have multiple Google accounts, remember which account you used to set up your remote desktop.
    2. You must give Google permission to access your desktop. This means you have to provide Google with access to your files and other items that usually are safely secured on your computer.
  2. Once you set up your host computer, visit the Apple App Store and search "Chrome Remote Desktop" on your iPad.
  3. Make sure to log in to the Chrome Remote Desktop app with the same Google account you set up the iPad's host computer.
  4. Click the device you want to access remotely and launch your virtual desktop session.

Download the Chrome Remote Desktop app today on your iPhone or iPad to increase your WFH productivity.

Troubleshooting and Google Chrome Help Community

  • “If the page won't open, check your iPhone’s or iPad’s connection.
