Rumors continue to swarm as everyone cannot stop talking about the appearance of Apple's latest iPhone 12 series. Although Apple hasn’t confirmed the specifications, there are some legitimate speculations about the iPhone 12 design.
The 12 series is expected to release four different iPhone models: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. If correct, the four models will be the most iPhone models Apple releases at once.
With various benefits to each model, let’s break down the possible design and display for each iPhone 12 model.
The new iPhone 12 base model screen is expected to be 5.4-inch diagonally. The smartphone will be roughly smaller than the iPhone X and about the same size as the iPhone 8 Plus released in 2017.
The iPhone 12 is also rumored to have a Super Retina OLED display, just like its recent predecessors. In comparison, the display resolution for the smallest 12 series model is expected to be 2340 x 1080-pixels.
In terms of design, the iPhone 12 will likely have an aluminum body—again, just like the iPhone 8. Additionally, like the iPhone 5, the iPhone 12 is rumored to have a flat metal-edge trim design. It is also likely that the iPhone 12 will have an entirely aluminum backing.
Similar colors to the iPhone 11 series, the iPhone 12 colors may include the following:
Other design features to look forward to on the iPhone 12 are repositioning the SIM tray and flatter side buttons.
Throughout all the iPhone 12 models, the SIM tray will be located beneath the volume buttons on the device’s left side with thinner physical controls for the Volume and Side buttons.
As for the camera, the iPhone 12 is highly likely to have two 12MP rear cameras. Almost the same as the iPhone 11, an Ultra Wide and Wide camera will be encased in a camera notch.
Basically, the iPhone 12 will still look like a new device, but with previous iPhone designs’ remnants, an upgraded combination of the iPhone 5, iPhone 8, and iPhone 11.
iPhone 12 Max
Unlike the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Max will surprisingly have a 6.1-inch (diagonally) screen, the same display size as the iPhone 11.
Even though the new device is labeled “Max,” the iPhone 12 Max won’t be as large as previous “Max” models. Nevertheless, the iPhone 12 Max will have a flexible Super Retina OLED screen with a 2632 x 1170-pixel resolution display.
Design-wise, the iPhone 12 Max will follow the same colors, design, and concepts as the base model.
With a presumed aluminum backing and flat metal-edge trim, the iPhone 12 Max will look the same as its counterpart and have two rear cameras with 12MP capabilities.
Despite the speculations about a smaller camera bump, users may not see a visible difference in size as the Max model isn’t as big as its predecessor.
The main idea is that the iPhone 12 Max design will look the same as the iPhone 12, but with a larger display screen size.
iPhone 12 Pro
The iPhone 12 Pro is the advanced version of the iPhone 12 base model. The iPhone 12 Pro display size is expected to be 6.1-inch diagonally with a Super Retina XDR OLED display.
Additionally, the iPhone 12 Pro is rumored to be the first-ever iPhone with 10-bit color support. The 10-bit color support gives images and colors appear more accurate on the iPhone 12 Pro than on previous display screens.
As for the iPhone 12 Pro design, the device is presumed to have a stainless steel backing with flat metal-edge trim. Like the regular iPhone 12, the “Pro” model will likely follow the same design pattern as the iPhone 5.
The only difference in appearance between the iPhone 5 and iPhone 12s is the camera bump and the back of the iPhone 12s will be entirely stainless steel, without a glass component at the top and bottom of the device.
In terms of the colors Apple may offer the iPhone Pro in, Apple is rumored to release four options in Space Gray, Silver, Gold, and Navy.
According to Taiwanese publication Digitimes, the new Navy colorway will replace the Midnight Green. Although, there haven’t been any hints from Apple that this design decision is correct
The upgraded camera features will be encased in the camera bump, which will look exactly like the iPhone 11 Pro Max camera’s design. The new iPhone with four camera features may include:
- Ultra Wide 12MP camera
- Telephoto cameras,
- LiDAR time-of-flight sensor
If speculations are turned into reality, the iPhone 12 Pro will be the first time Apple incorporates LiDAR technology into an iPhone.
However, the design and display size will look exactly like the iPhone 12 Max, with the key differences being the camera quality and 10-bit color support display screen.
iPhone 12 Pro Max
Finally, the new iPhone series’s most innovative and advanced model is the iPhone 12 Pro Max. With two superlatives in its name—“Pro” and “Max”—this model is speculated to be Apple's most futuristic and innovative iPhone to date.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max display size is expected to be 6.7-inch diagonally, which is slightly bigger than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. It may also have a Super Retina XDR OLED with a potential resolution of 2778 x 1824-pixels and thickness of potentially 7.4 mm.
Like the other “Pro” model, the iPhone 12 Pro Max body design is speculated to be stainless steel.
Once again, Apple may revive previous designs from the iPad Pro to the iPhone 12 Pro Max when adding a flat metal-edge trim and flatter buttons, including the camera bump.
The camera bump may appear smaller since the device is large compared to the other iPhone 12 series models. The iPhone 12 Max will also have the same four color options as the iPhone 12 Pro in Space Gray, Silver, Rose Gold, and Navy.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is also presumed to have a triple camera system with the LiDAR Scanner. These systems will be encased within the camera bump, too.
Best of all, the iPhone 12 Pro Max may have a 120Hz refresh rate. This means the iPhone 12 Pro Max will have twice as fast refresh speed as all previous iPhones.
A higher refresh rate means more images will be shown in the same amount of time, so movement between frames will appear smoother—perfect for video streaming and recording!
All-in-all, the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be a state-of-the-art smartphone.
If all speculations about this device are correct—high processing capabilities and camera functionality—the iPhone 12 Pro Max resemble a miniature version of the iPad Pro.
Until Apple announces the iPhone 12 in September, we know that the iPhone 12 series will resemble the iPhone 5 and iPad Pro.
Despite having different sizes, iPhone users can experience Apple’s latest innovation and technology with high processing power and crisp camera capabilities in the new iPhone 2020.
The iPhone 12 has been long-anticipated as the next-gen iPhone, and now, it's here. Offering 5G connectivity, the A14 chip, new camera systems, and more, the iPhone 12 upgrades everything. With a refreshing design of the iPhone frame itself, the iPhone 12 sets up the iPhone product line for the future.
