iPhone 12 Model Ranked: Everything You Need To Know

The highly anticipated iPhone 12 features four different models in the latest iPhone series, including the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

If you plan to get the new iPhone 2020, we ranked the latest iPhone 12 models to help you decide which iPhone 12 is better for you.

If you plan to get the new iPhone 2020, we ranked the latest iPhone 12 models to help you decide which iPhone 12 is better for you.

Let’s look at the best and worst iPhone 12 models, starting with the iPhone 12.

iPhone 12

Price and Storage

Coming in at first place is the flagship iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 starts at a base price of $799 for 64GB with an option to increase it to 128GB and 256GB. Contrary to early speculations, the iPhone 12 in fact offers a 64GB storage option.

Let’s quickly compare the prices between the iPhone 12 and its predecessor, the iPhone 11.

iPhone 12 iPhone 11
$799 for 64GB $699 for 64GB
$849 for 128GB $749 for 128GB
$949 for 256GB $849 for 256GB

Ultimately, the iPhone 12 will be the best value-based model as the iPhone 12 mini costs almost the same, but its hardware is significantly smaller.

Size and Display

The iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch diagonally Super Retina XDR display, glass backing, and an aluminum frame. It also features the latest Ceramic Shield technology which protects your device from breaking easily.

If you’re used to the massive iPhone size or enjoy streaming videos on a larger display screen, the iPhone 12 will be the best choice for device size, display options, and cost.

For the price, the iPhone 12 has everything you love about the iPhone and more.

The iPhone 12 will has a64GB RAM and the new A14 processor. The A14 chip is the most powerful and efficient processing chip in any iPhone ever. Additionally, the 5G connectivity is incorporated into all iPhone 12 models.

Although Apple didn't announce the technical specifications of the battery, the iPhone 12 was speculated to have a 2,775 mAh, which will provide up to 17 hours of video playback and up to 65 hours of audio playback. With MagSafe, you can also charge your iPhone 12 up to 50% charge in 30 minutes with 20W adapter or higher.

For the price to value, the iPhone 12 ranks first again for its quality hardware.

Whenever Apple releases a new iPhone, general consumers and fans usually scrutinize each device’s camera quality.

The iPhone 12 has a dual-camera system featuring a 12MP Wide and an Ultra Wide Camera, the same as the iPhone 11. The dual-camera system will also have Night Mode and other software updates, too.

A triple-camera system may not be necessary for the average iPhone user, significantly since it will cost more. If you’re not planning on taking professional photos, the iPhone 12 is the best choice for you.

iPhone 12 mini

Price and Storage

In the second place, the flagship iPhone 12's tiny version, the iPhone 12 mini. It is the second-best value-based 12 series model.

Let’s take a look at the base model iPhone 12 mini's price compared to other models available.

By comparing the iPhone 12 to the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE, it shows where the iPhone 12 price to value falls in the iPhone lineup.

iPhone 12 iPhone 12 Max iPhone 11
$799 for 64GB $699 for 64GB $699 for 64GB
$849 for 128GB $749 for 128GB $749 for 128GB
$949 for 256GB $849 for 256GB $849 for 256GB

For only $100 less, the iPhone 12 mini is the same price as the iPhone 11. If you don't mind the smaller size and on a budget, the iPhone 12 mini is the second-best model to buy. It offers the same storage options and features as the standard iPhone 12 with no major differences.

Size and Display

The iPhone 12 mini is 5.4-inch diagonally, which its size didn't exist in any iPhone on the market today. It’s closest counterpart is the recent iPhone 11 Pro, which is 5.8-inch. The iPhone 12 mini resembles the old iPhone 5 the most.

Even though the device has an edge-to-edge display, the iPhone 12 mini be too small to stream videos comfortably. In terms of its screen, the iPhone 12 mini also has a Super Retina XDR display.

Again, just like the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 mini has an aluminum frame and glass backing. These material, design characteristics, and size are reminiscent of the iPhone 5 released in 2012. You can choose from five different colors: Black, White, Blue, Green, and (PRODUCT) Red.

Like the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 mini has the A14 processing chip, 4GB RAM and 5G network features. This may just make the Phone 12 mini potentially the most powerful smartphone for its size.

However, just like the iPhone 12, the battery specifications were not released. Its alleged battery capacity maybe only 2,227 mAh—that’s significantly less than the iPhone 11 with 3,110 mAh. The iPhone 12 mini battery would be closer to the iPhone SE (2nd gen.) battery at 1,821 mAh.

For only $100 more and a decrease in battery capacity, the iPhone 12 may not be ideal for those continually using their device daily. Nonetheless, if you prefer a smaller device, the iPhone 12 mini would be a great choice.

The iPhone 12 mini also has a dual-camera system with 12MP Wide and Ultra Wide cameras. Since the device is quite small, to begin with, the camera bump takes up almost 1/3 of the backside of the iPhone 12 mini.

Consider buying a protective case with MagSafe to balance the backside so it can lay flat.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

In third place is the iPhone 12 Pro Max. It's the most advanced and expensive iPhone model in the 12 series. However, compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a steal. Here’s a comparison of the two models:

iPhone 12 Pro Max iPhone 11 Pro Max
$999 for 128 GB $1099 for 64GB
$1099 for 256GB $1249 for 128GB
$1299 for 512GB $1449 for 512GB

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has 128GB compared to only 64GB in the iPhone 11 version for the same price. Although the starting price is relatively high compared to the other 12 series models, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is worth the price if you are looking for a top-tier smartphone.

Size and Display

The iPhone 12 Pro Max display screen is 6.7-inch diagonally, which will be the biggest iPhone to date. In comparison, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is slightly smaller as it is 6.5-inch.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max also has the Super Retina XDR Display with Ceramic Shield and MagSafe charging. Unfortunately, Apple ultimately did not include the 120Hz refresh rate on this smartphone.

In terms of design, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has an upgraded body compared to the other 12 series models. The iPhone 12 Pro Max's body frame is encased in stainless steel, which will resemble the iPad Pro.

Given the projected price of this device, the iPhone 12 Pro Max will feel sturdy and luxurious.

Like the other 12 series devices, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the A14 processor and 5G connectivity, too.

Another speculation that missed the mark was predicting the iPhone 12 Pro Max would have 6GB RAM. Again, ultimately Apple did not include such RAM power into the iPhone which disappointed many Apple fans.

Let’s take a look at the iPhone 12 Pro Max processing power compared to other Apple devices:

Product RAM Space
iPhone 12 Pro Max 4GB
iPhone 11 Pro Max 4GB
iPad Pro 6GB
MacBook Air 8GB

Unfortunately, the only major downside to the hardware is the battery, again. The projected battery capacity may be 3,687 mAh. This measurement is less than its predecessor, the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Given the A14 efficiency, the iPhone 12 Max Pro battery might not drain as quickly as we expect.

One of the only reasons to purchase the iPhone 12 Max Pro is for its triple-camera system. This model will have four features enclosed in the camera bump, such as:

  • 12MP Wide
  • 12MP Ultra Wide
  • Telephoto lens
  • LiDAR Scanner

With the incorporation of the LiDAR scanner, this is another iPad Pro feature incorporated into iOS devices.

Apple virtually picked apart the iPad Pro camera and hardware to make the “Pro” model of the iPhone 12 series, making this smartphone worth every penny.

iPhone 12 Pro

Last but not least, the iPhone 12 Pro comes in fourth out of four iPhone 12 models. Arguably, for the projected price compared to the technology, features, and innovation the iPhone 12 “Pro” models offer, it might not be worth it.

Let’s compare prices:

iPhone 12 Pro iPhone 11 Pro
$999 for 128GB $699 for 64GB
$1099 for 256GB $749 for 128GB
$1299 for 512GB $849 for 256GB

For $999 the iPhone 12 Pro is $300 more than the previous iPhone 11 Pro. This price increase is relatively large historically. To put in perspective, the flagship iPhone 12 is $799, whereas the iPhone SE is $399. That’s also a $300 difference, but the two devices are significantly different.

If you’re already planning on investing in a high-performance smartphone, consider supporting $100 more for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Size and Display

The iPhone 12 Pro is 6.1-inch diagonally, which is the same size as the iPhone 12 Max and the iPhone 11.

The iPhone 12 Pro is an excellent choice if you like a larger device. The iPhone 12 Pro will also have a stainless steel frame, like the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 Pro will look more like the iPhone 5 than the iPad Pro since it’s slightly smaller.

However, considering the display has the Super Retina XDR Display, having a larger screen size may maximize its display capabilities. From gaming, streaming to reading the 6.1-inch screen may not be enough.

The iPhone 12 Pro is expected to have the same hardware and features as the iPhone Pro Max. Consumers should expect the same stainless steel body, 5G compatibility, the A14 chip, and 4 GB RAM.

Moreover, the projected battery capacity is also relatively low at 2,775 mAh. That’s only better than the smallest, iPhone 12 mini.

Considering it’s a “Pro” model, the battery may not match other models in the series. The flagship iPhone 12 (which we ranked number 1) has 2,815 mAh and is priced reasonably.

Although the iPhone 12 Pro has the same powerful features as it’s “Max” model, the iPhone 12 Pro price just doesn’t add up to its value.

However, if you prefer the smaller screen, the iPhone 12 is a guaranteed workhorse. But, keep in mind that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is only $100 more for an entirely elevated iPhone experience.

The iPhone 12 Pro has the same camera system and features as the iPhone Pro Max and the iPad Pro. The camera notch contains:

  • 12MP Wide
  • 12MP Ultra Wide
  • Telephoto lens
  • Night mode
  • LiDAR Scanner
