If you kept up with Apple's news these past couple of months, you may have heard about Apple's supply issue that delayed the launch of the iPhone 12.
Apple’s second-largest supplier, Pegatron, has put forward an initial $150M investment to set up building manufacturing facilities in India.
Find out more about Pegatron’s reported $1B plan below.
India Welcomes iPhone Maker
Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, Pegatron Corporation carries out research, development, design, manufacturing, and maintenance services for consumer electronics. Tech giant Apple has since become one of Pegatron's biggest production clients.
Pegatron is one of three Apple suppliers, the other two being Foxconn and Wistron, and is the second largest after Foxconn.
The Pegatron subsidiary was registered in July this year. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it is challenging for Pegatron staff to make regular trips to India to see the establishment according to the original timeline.
Expanding Manufacturing from China to India
A recent statement, Electronics and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, reveals that Apple started diversifying the production of iPhones outside of China and into India during the pandemic.
By expanding production to India, this shift could potentially come as a response to growing tensions between the U.S. and China.
Also, Pegatron CEO Liao Syh-jang has said that the Pegatron factory expects to start production in late 2021 or early 2022 and that the company is looking into making more investments in India over the course of two years.
Pegatron Sets up Target Goals & Commitments in India
Under the PLI scheme, Pegatron is expected to roll out handsets worth Rs 4000 crore in its first year of India's production. That estimate is around $54,000 and is slotted to begin in March of 2021.
Pegatron is expected to tread carefully in India after Apple placed the company on probation for violating its supplier code of conduct in China.
Apple will have this opportunity as a major move in expanding its manufacturing capacity outside of China and diversify manufacturing plants in other parts of the world.
