On December 3, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for Consumer Information issued a warning against a new scam calls scheme.
Scammers are pretending to call on behalf of Amazon and Apple to obtain valuable security information from people.
Scammers Feigning to Be Amazon & Apple
The FTC is warning against two types of calls. In one version, you receive a call where the automated message claims to be Amazon.
The message says that there has been some trouble with your Amazon account: a lost or suspicious package or trouble fulfilling your order.
In a second version of the scam calls, you receive a call from "Apple" claiming there has been some suspicious activity on your iCloud account. They even go as far as saying your iCloud account has been breached.
FTC: Don't Do What They Ask You To Do!
In both scenarios, the scammers instruct you to 'Press 1' to speak with a customer support representative, or they give you a phone number to call.
DO NOT DO EITHER!
These scammers attempt to gain access to your personal information like credit card or account information from Amazon or Apple.
The FTC advises you to simply hang up if you receive a scam call or message of this sort and:
- Do NOT press 1 to speak with customer service support.
- Do NOT call the phone number they give you.
- Do NOT give out any personal or account information.
Furthermore, if you feel as if there may be some legitimate concerns with your account, the FTC advises you to get in contact with the company using their official website to avoid falling victim to these scams.
If you would like to learn how to block scam calls, read the FTC article on How to Block Unwanted Calls.
The FTC advises you to help fight fraud by reporting such calls to their website.
