Strong demand for the iPhone 12 has Apple gearing up to boost production plans of the latest phone production plansby 20-30% in 2021.
According to a report from Nikkei Asia today, Apple plans to produce up to 96 million iPhones for the first half of 2021, a nearly 30% year-on-year increase.
The iPhone 12 series (iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max) was released earlier this year in October.
Reports of iPhone 12 Production Cite Close Sources
Nikkei Asia's report cites supply-chain sources as revealing Apple's production plans for iPhone 12 in the new year.
The Cupertino-based tech giant has asked suppliers to build some 95 million to 96 million iPhones, including the latest iPhone 12 range and the older iPhone 11 and iPhone SE, multiple people familiar with the matter told Nikkei Asia, [although] industrywide shortages of key components could threaten that target.
The report goes on to offer a sneak into Apple's full-year production plan in saying that the tech-giant is planning on building up to 230 million iPhones for 2021. This will include old and new models and would boost a 20% rise up from 2019 targets.
Apple will continuously monitor targets for this plan in response to consumer demand.
An executive at a key Apple supplier told Nikkei plans for the iPhone 12 in that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are higher in demand. In contrast, the demand for the iPhone 12 mini is significantly lower in comparison.
The particularly high demand for iPhone 12 could result from it being Apple's response to 5G competitor phones.
Anything is subject to change if Apple rolls out new features such as the always-on display or ProMotion.
