A recent report on Monday, October 19th, by prolific Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo showed that Apple's pre-order numbers for the iPhone 12 topped their pre-order numbers for the iPhone 11 last year.
Kuo reported that the iPhone 12 models had approximately 2 million pre-orders, 800,000 more than they had the year before for iPhone 11 models. The iPhone 12 Pro sold especially well in China's market.
However, over the weekend, the iPhone 12 models only had 9 million pre-orders, down from 12 million pre-orders for the iPhone 11 models over its initial launch weekend.
Kuo's reports have been accurate in the past, and outlets around the world trust his word. Since Apple hasn't made their sales reports public for the iPhone two years ago, very few analysts have managed to correctly report sales numbers as Kuo has.
Highlights From Kuo's Report
Besides the increase in Friday numbers, Kuo's report also made some other predictions and thoughts about the iPhone 12's general performance. As Kuo is a Chinese analyst, many of his predictions are concerned with the device's sales numbers in China.
Kuo's report also included these notes:
- Apple's sales to go up for fiscal 2021 because of iPhone 12's 5G compatibility
- iPhone 11 price drop to $599 diminished iPhone 12 pre-orders
- iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max pre-orders will be less than the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro's
- iPhone 12 mini to perform poorly in China because it lacks Dual SIM technology
- iPhone 12 and 12 Pro shipping times have been extended, suggesting that pre-order numbers exceeded Apple's expectations.
With the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max yet to come out, the iPhone 12 lineup's overall sales performance has yet to be complete. Hence, a full evaluation cannot be done. However, the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro's current performance is at least respectable.
5G technology is looking to push Apple's iPhone line into a new generation, and in terms of sales, it certainly looks to be that way.
You can still pre-order the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro on Apple's website right now. The two models retail for $799 and $999 respectively. They will ship out on October 23rd, which is also the date when you can purchase them in-stores.
