For Apple enthusiasts unaware, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoC (system on a chip) line is similar to the A-series silicon found within iPhones and iPads.

Because Apple makes their own SoCs, however, Qualcomm competes in the same mobile space by marketing their products through the latest Android devices.

This morning, Qualcomm Incorporated revealed that their next flagship processor for smartphones would be called the Snapdragon 888.

The Brains Behind the Smartphone

Apple has been a step ahead in the processor game since the introduction of the A11 Bionic in 2017. One of the things that made the iPhone X such a potent and industry-shifting device was that its on-board processor was incredibly revolutionary.

It’s hard to argue with the raw performance brought to the table by Apple’s proprietary processors, and Qualcomm has yet to beat Apple to the punch. It’s usually Qualcomm that must play catch-up, even if by only a few months.

The last Qualcomm SoC, the Snapdragon 865, competed with the Apple A13 Bionic processor. In some areas, it even came out ahead of the A13.

According to Nanoreview’s benchmark comparisons between the A13 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865, the 865 scored higher in gaming performance and battery life. The A13 edged it out by a single point in single and multi-core CPU performance.

Compared to the 855, the current-gen Snapdragon 865 brought about a 25% increase in CPU performance and a 20% increase in GPU performance.

The Snapdragon 888

Qualcomm announced today that the next processor in its lineup wouldn’t be the Snapdragon 875, but the Snapdragon 888. It is only the first day of Qualcomm’s yearly Snapdragon Tech Summit, so more details regarding the chip will be disclosed tomorrow.

We know that it will feature an integrated 5G modem, Qualcomm’s own 5nm X60 modem, 35% faster image processing, a new AI engine, and the next generation of Adreno graphics.

Qualcomm looks to compete head-to-head with the iPhone 12’s A14. With Apple set to source the X60, X65, and X70 5G modems from Qualcomm until 2024, the two companies will be seeing much more of each other shortly.
