Severe Battery Drainage Reported with iOS 14.2 Update

Apple users have been reporting severe battery drainage following the iOS 14.2 update.

Users are sharing their frustration on Apple Developer forums and Reddit.

A Bug in The Apple

The issue is noted to occur through rapid battery drainage and longer than usual charging times.

On the Apple Developer forum, one user reports:

iPhone X here. Same issue since upgraded to 14.2. SEVERE battery drain just texting a few ppl. Taking a 10 second video etc. if I play a 2 minute words with friends my battery drains by 10-15%. Charging it takes over night (7) hours of starting in the 20% range. I now bring a portable charger with me everywhere just to be sure I’ll make it through a few hours away from home. I don’t have background refresher on apps or mail. The only thing I do is answer calls or texts and I’ll be between 40-50% after 2-3 hours. Most of the time it’s in my pocket. Gets HOT when charging

This battery bug seems to be an isolated software issue where battery life remains high before suddenly dropping.

Users on Reddit report that the iOS 14.2 bug affects older iPhone models such as the iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone XS, and report iPhone SE more intensely. It also has been affecting the iPad Pro running iPadOS 14.2.

The battery life also jumps back into higher numbers for some users upon restarting their Apple device.

When Will Apple Exterminate the Bug?

iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 followed shortly behind the iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1 updates that were made in September of this year.

There has been no indication or official announcement regarding iOS 14.2.1 releasing a solution to fix the battery bug. This release sought to fix bugs with MMS messaging and the issue of screen responsiveness on the iPhone 12 mini.

However, there may be light at the end of the tunnel with third developer and public beta of iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 having already been released. Perhaps this update includes the solution to the current iOS 14.2 bugs.
