Unlike the iPhone 11 series, the iPhone 12s have four size options. Two of the smaller iPhone 12s are the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini.
From Apple's "Hi, Speed" virtual event held on October 13, 2020, the iPhone 12 mini is supposed to have the same features and specifications and only differ on the size dimensions.
The main questions everyone is asking now are, "Is the iPhone 12 mini worth it? Is it better than the iPhone 12?"
Before we determine if the iPhone 12 mini is more worth your investment than the iPhone 12, let's quickly review the iPhone 12 mini design, size, and specifications.
iPhone 12 mini Specs
As described during the Apple event, the iPhone 12 mini has the same features as the iPhone 12.
From its flat edged surface combined with an aluminum frame, the iPhone 12 mini was designed to be smaller and lighter than before. Apple CEO Tim Cook shared that the iPhone 12s are designed to be "11% thinner, 15% smaller [and] 16% lighter than the iPhone 11."
The iPhone 12 mini was also designed to include new antennas to support the integrated 5G connectivity feature. At its peak, the iPhone 12s have mmWave connectivity to support 4GB/s download speed and 200MB/s upload speed in ideal conditions.
The integration of the 5G network connection encouraged Apple to add a Smart Data mode to the iPhone 12s. The Smart Data mode teaches the iPhone 12s to use LTE connection to conserve the battery when your device doesn't need nor use the 5G network.
Another key feature to note is the A14 Bionic chip and Dual-Camera system seen on both the iPhone 12 and 12 mini. With 16-cores and the ability to support 11 trillion operations per second, the iPhone 12s are 80% faster than before with the new Neural Engine.
The dual-camera system includes the following:
- 12MP Ultra Wide and Wide cameras
- 7 element lens
- 27% improvement in low-light performance
- Upgraded Night Mode to capture more light in dimmer environments
- Enhanced video recording for the highest quality on any smartphone

Key Differences: iPhone 12 mini vs. iPhone 12
While the iPhone 12 and 12 mini have several similarities, including the MagSafe wireless charging capability, the 12 mini differs in terms of its screen size and price.
Starting at $699, the iPhone 12 mini has a much smaller display at 5.4-inch (diagonally) compared to the iPhone 12's 6.1-inch (diagonally) screen.
Although both models use the Super Retina XDR display that gives you twice as many pixels as the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 mini has a lower pixel resolution than the iPhone 12.
If you don't mind the smaller screen size of 0.7 inches and want to get the same benefits of the iPhone 12 at a lower price, the iPhone 12 mini could be for you. The good thing about both the iPhone 12 and 12 mini is that they have more color options than the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini color options include the following:
- (Navy) Blue
- (Light) Green
- (PRODUCT) Red
Like the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the iPhone 12 mini is available to pre-order online on November 16 and in-stores on November 23.
You can take advantage of Apple's trade-in offer that gives you up to $250 off the iPhone 12s. If you don't want to trade-in, Apple also has special offers with specific carriers that give you access to the 5G network with the iPhone 12 of your choice.
