‘Vanish Mode’ Enables Snapchat-esque Disappearing Messages on Instagram and Messenger

For Your Eyes Only

Back in September, Facebook announced plans to revamp messaging in its Messenger and Instagram applications. Today, the company made good on that promise by adding ‘Vanish Mode.’

Vanish Mode allows users to send text-based messages, voice-recorded messages, emojis, images, GIFs, and stickers that will, as the name suggests, vanish. After the parties have exited the chat, the content will no longer be retrievable.

End-to-end encryption ensures security, and, if either person takes a screenshot, the others will be notified. Again, this is a familiar feature from Snapchat.

One of the major strengths of Vanish Mode is that it is exactly that: a mode. Snapchat, for all intents and purposes, has its automatic message removal feature baked into the software and active at all times. Vanish Mode, which is enabled in iOS’ Messenger and Instagram apps by swiping up in the chat, can be disabled.

Check It Out for Yourself

Vanish Mode is now available on Messenger in the U.S. and will soon be available on Instagram. To access it there, you must have Facebook’s Messenger features enabled on Instagram.
