The iPhone 12 has been long-anticipated as the next-gen iPhone, and now, it's here. Offering 5G connectivity, the A14 chip, new camera systems, and more, the iPhone 12 upgrades everything. With a refreshing design of the iPhone frame itself, the iPhone 12 sets up the iPhone product line for the future.

At the 2020 WWDC, Apple announced that the iPhone 12 would be coming out, and at Apple's October 13th event, "Hi, Speed", the iPhone 12 was launched. With it came an array of upgrades that usher in the new generation of iPhones.

Returning to a flat-edge design, the iPhone 12 breaks off from previous iPhone models by using a rectangular frame rather than a round frame. This change in design was a result of the several new improvements that the iPhone 12 implements.

There are four models of the iPhone 12: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. This page will focus on the former two, as they share all the same features except their device size and battery life.

As is the case with most recent Apple products, the iPhone 12 will use a USB-C plug and cords. While the cord will come with the device, the adapter will not. This is part of Apple's carbon footprint reduction plan. The iPhone 12 will support wireless charging and in fact, Apple is working on its own wireless charger. More on that later.

An iPhone's camera is very important, and the iPhone 12 will come with the best camera yet. The iPhone 12 will come with a dual-camera system comprised of an Ultra Wide and brand-new Wide camera. The front camera is also a TrueDepth camera.

Appearing first on the iPad Air (2020), the A14 chip appears again on the iPhone 12. This chip is Apple's fastest yet, and it outperforms any other smartphone chip. With incredibly powerful processing power, the A14 chip guarantees top-notch performance on the iPhone 12 for anything from video streaming to gaming.

The last of the major upgrades, but certainly not the least, is the long-anticipated 5G support. The iPhone 12 supports 5G networks, something that Apple fans have been requesting for years. With 5G become more pervasive around the world, iPhone 12 users will experience unprecedented speeds with the iPhone 12.

Design and Size

The iPhone 12 lineup all use the flat-edged frame, designed to incorporate all of the iPhone 12's new improvements. The iPhone 12 and 12 mini are made from aluminum with glass on the front and back. Around the frame are new antenna bands, designed for 5G connectivity support.

The display is a Super Retina XDR OLED display, which makes the iPhone 12's base model's screen better than the iPhone 11 Pro's. With 460 PPI on the iPhone 12 and 476 PPI on the iPhone 12 mini, you're guaranteed top-notch graphics. You'll also get better True colors with the new display.

On the topic of the screen, iPhone 12 uses Apple's brand-new Ceramic Shield technology. Encasing the iPhone 12's screens, the new Ceramic Shield adds toughness to your iPhone. With 4x better drop performance, it'll be a lot harder to crack your phone screen. The iPhone 12 is also IP68 water and dust resistant, so it'll survive in water depths of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.

You'll be able to get the iPhone 12 and 12 mini in Black, White, (PRODUCT) Red, Green, and Blue. You can also choose between 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage options.

When we use our smartphones to complete almost every task throughout the day, we will need a reliable battery to support us. Luckily, the iPhone 12 comes with a decent battery.

With up to 17 hours of video playback (11 hours if streamed) and up to 65 hours of audio playback, you won't be charging your iPhone 12 often. And, thanks to its fast-charge ability, you can up to 50% battery capacity in just 30 minutes with a 20W adapter. The iPhone 12 mini offers up to 15 hours of video playback (10 hours if streamed) and up to 50 hours of audio playback.

While the iPhone 12 is still compatible with its USB-C to Lightning cable, you can charge it in another way too. The iPhone 12 lineup supports wireless charging, but more than that, it now comes with the brand-new MagSafe system.

In addition to the set of magnets built into the back of the iPhone 12, Apple's own wireless chargers and accessories click into optimal positions. This is especially useful for the new MagSafe wireless charger, since the off-center placement of your iPhone on a wireless charger may cause the device to not charge properly.

With the new MagSafe technology, Apple has introduced new MagSafe accessories including a MagSafe charger, MagSafe cases, and MagSafe wallets. These are all available on the Apple website.

The iPhone 12's camera gets a huge upgrade. And rightfully so, as the camera has become one of the most important aspects of an iPhone. The iPhone 12 gets a dual-camera system, one of which is a brand-new lens.

Making up the iPhone 12's back camera bump is the 12MP Wide and 12MP Ultra Wide cameras. Although the megapixel rate hasn't changed, the 12MP Wide camera is actually more improved than its preceding models. With a 7-element lens and f/1.6 aperture, the 12MP Wide camera is both fast and clear. You also get 27% better performance for low-light shots.

HDR has been a big part of iPhone cameras, and the iPhone 12 gets the latest Smart HDR 3 system. Using machine-learning, Smart HDR 3 adjusts for color and noise to ensure you capture even the smallest details on your shots. This works even in Night Mode, which has improved light capture.

The front camera is also upgraded because unlike previous iPhones, you get a more complete camera package even for your selfies. The 12MP TrueDepth camera on the front is equipped with Smart HDR 3, Night Mode, Deep Fusion, and of course, Portrait Mode.

The front and back cameras can record 4K videos at 60 fps and HDR Dolby Vision video recording at 30 fps. You'll be able to capture movie-level cinematography. On the back camera, you get improved optical image stabilization, 2x optical zoom, QuickTake, and more amazing features to get the best videos possible.

Processing Chip

First introduced on the iPad Air (2020), the A14 chip outperforms all other smartphone chips on the market. And that's what you'll be getting with the iPhone 12.

The A14 chip has a 6-core CPU, making it 50% faster than any other smartphone's CPU; it also has a 4-core GPU, so its graphics are 50% better than any other smartphone's. Combined with an unprecedented 5 nm processing technology, you get efficiency and power all in one.

For machine-learning features, trust in Apple's next-generation Neural Engine. With 16 cores—twice as many as the previous Neural Engine—the next-gen Neural Engine can perform up to 11 trillion operations per second, making it 80% faster than its predecessor.

With the A14 chip, the iPhone 12 unlocks a vast array of possibilities. One of which is console-level graphics on the iPhone, something that was deemed impossible before. With this technology, the world's most popular game, League of Legends, is coming to the iPhone.

5G Connectivity

Probably the most critical advancement of the iPhone 12, 5G support has been a long-time request of Apple fans. Now, with the iPhone 12, it's finally here. Already available across the U.S., users will be able to enjoy the speeds of 5G on the iPhone.

Using Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network—touted as the fastest 5G network in the world—the iPhone 12 can reach blazing speeds. Thanks to mmWave technology, which was rumored to be available only on the Pro models, the iPhone 12 can reach 4 Gbps download speeds and 200 Mbps upload speeds.

Although 5G connectivity is great, it is certainly battery-consuming. That's why Apple implemented Smart Data mode, which uses LTE speeds when 5G speeds aren't necessary, so your iPhone can save battery.

The iPhone 12 ushers in a new era of the iPhone: the era of 5G. Thus, Apple has updated and optimized all of its apps and iOS 14 for 5G compatibility.

The iPhone 12 has a starting price of $799 while the iPhone 12 mini has a starting price of $699.

You can also use your current iPhone to reduce this price through Apple's trade-in program. You can also pay off your iPhone through monthly installments for rates as low as $12/month.

Design and Size

The iPhone 12 has a completely new design. Whereas the iPhone 11 used round edges, the iPhone 12 uses flat edges, reverting to a design similar to the iPhone 5. This flat-edge design allows Apple to implement a set of new technologies.

Although both iPhones have 6.1-inch edge-to-edge displays, the iPhone 12's is superior. Using Super Retina XDR OLED technology, the iPhone 12's display simply outperforms the iPhone 11's Liquid Retina LCD display. For example, compare the PPIs of each phone: the iPhone 11 has 326 PPI whereas the iPhone 12 has 460 PPI.

Additionally, the iPhone 12 comes with Ceramic Shield technology on its screen, making it less vulnerable to fall damage. With 4x better drop performance, you can rest easier with the iPhone 12, knowing that it won't crack often.

Both iPhone models offer 17 hours of video playback. However, with all the new features that the iPhone 12 offers, it could be argued that its battery is better than the iPhone 11's. After all, the A14 chip is very efficient.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 11's 17 hours of video playback can also be translated into 65 hours of audio playback. However, while the iPhone 11 offers 10 hours of streamed video playback, the iPhone 12 offers 11 hours.

While both iPhone models also support wireless charging, the iPhone 12 comes with MagSafe technology. MagSafe technology is a set of magnets implemented into the back of the iPhone 12 for better connections with wireless accessories like chargers or cases.

Of course, you can still charge your iPhone 11 on a wireless charger, but you might misplace it if you're in a hurry. Placing the iPhone 11 off-center may cause it to charge poorly, so you won't get the maximum charge out of your iPhone. MagSafe technology helps your iPhone click to place, so you'll never have to worry about misplacements.

With MagSafe technology comes Apple's new MagSafe accessories. Apple has recently unveiled a Magsafe charger, Magsafe cases, and Magsafe wallets, all of which click onto your iPhone 12 with ease.

While the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 appear to have the same camera system, there is one significant difference: the 12MP Wide camera upgrade. The iPhone 12's Wide camera gets a range of upgrades, making it a more versatile and powerful tool.

The iPhone 12's 12MP Wide camera has a lower aperture and a 7-element lens. This means it's faster and clearer. It also performs 27% better in low-light environments than its predecessor. And, you'll get all the great camera features on the iPhone 11 like Portrait Mode, QuickTake, Night Mode, and more.

Smart HDR also gets an upgrade to Smart HDR 3 on the iPhone 12. Using machine-learning, Smart HDR 3 is able to capture details with greater clarity. Adjusting for color and noise, Smart HDR 3 brings out even the small things in photos.

What makes this even better is that all of these great features are available on the iPhone 12's front camera too. Whereas the iPhone 11's front camera is still lagging far behind its back cameras, the iPhone 12's 12MP TrueDepth camera is still a top-notch lens, capable of taking fantastic photos.

When it comes to video recording, both iPhone models can take 4K videos at 60 fps, but only the iPhone 12 can take HDR Dolby Vision videos at 30fps, the first camera ever to do this. It also offers time-lapse in Night Mode.

Processing Chip

First appearing on the iPad Air (2020), the A14 chip is Apple's fastest chip yet. It can run console-level graphics, edit 4K videos at a high speed and much faster than the A13 chip of the iPhone 11. To handle the new features of the iPhone 12 is already impressive enough, but to maintain the battery life is an incredible feat made possible by the A14 chip.

With the A14 chip comes a brand-new Neural Engine. The latest Neural Engine can perform 11 trillion operations per second, making it the fastest for machine learning. Able to analyze data in real-time and perform the most advanced tasks, the A14 chip is a clear upgrade from the A13.

5G Connectivity

The last significant difference is quite an obvious one: the iPhone 12 supports 5G connectivity whereas the iPhone 11 does not.

Connected to Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network, the iPhone 12 is compatible with 5G networks across the U.S. 5G allows the iPhone to reach peak download speeds of 4 Gbps and peak upload speeds of 200 Mbps.

For the fastest iPhone out there, get the iPhone 12. While the iPhone 11 is still a highly-advanced phone, the iPhone 12 simply outpaces the iPhone 11 with its 5G compatibility.

Design and Size

The primary difference between the iPhone 12 and the 12 mini is the design of the devices. While both use the same materials and have the new flat-edge design, the frames' size is different.
The iPhone 12 measures in at 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4 mm, whereas the iPhone 12 mini measures in at 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.4 mm. They weigh 164 grams and 135 grams, respectively.

As a result, the iPhone 12's screen is slightly larger than the iPhone 12's mini. The iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch edge-to-edge display instead of the iPhone 12 mini's 5.4-inch edge-to-edge display. Both devices, however, use Super Retina XDR OLED technology, making for high-contrasting visuals. They also have Apple's new Ceramic Shield technology for screen protection.

Because of their different screen sizes, the two devices' resolutions are also slightly different. The iPhone 12 has a 2532 x 1170 resolution at 460 PPI. The iPhone 12 mini has a higher PPI; its 2340 x 1080 resolution has 476 PPI.

Besides their design and size, the only significant difference between the iPhone 12 and the 12 mini is their battery life.

The iPhone 12 offers 17 hours of video playback, 11 hours of streamed video playback, or 65 hours of audio playback. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 mini offers 15 hours of video playback, 10 hours of streamed video playback, or 50 hours of audio playback.

Both are compatible with wireless charging and have fast-charge features that get the device up to 50% charge in just 30 minutes (a 20W adapter is required, though).

Apple also released its MagSafe charger. The MagSafe charger is a unique, Qi-certified wireless charger that is compatible with several Apple products. It is best used with the iPhone 12 models because of the MagSafe magnets into the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The MagSafe magnets provide a reliable wireless charging experience as it positions the device via the magnetic pull between the charger and iPhone.
